Change that Works Campaign

Political Community Organizer - $3800 Monthly plus Benefits

Purpose: SEIU is looking for a motivated, organized, and dedicated individual to work with the Change that Works Campaign State Director to implement a grassroots advocacy campaign in targeted congressional districts to pass national health care reform and the Employee Free Choice Act in 2009.

The Political Community Organizer will work with a team of Organizers in Training to implement an escalating field and earned media campaign to influence targeted Members of Congress on SEIU's legislative priorities.

Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To:·

  • Work with field director or designee to create a regional campaign plan including organization building and mobilization activities, a timeline for implementation and measurable outcomes for each phase of the campaign,
  • Take responsibility for implementing the campaign plan in an individual region including meeting daily and weekly region-wide campaign goals,
  • Lead a team of Organizers in Training to meet daily and weekly campaign goals by providing training, coaching modeling, and accountability,
  • Lead daily check in calls in the morning and check out calls in the evening with assigned Organizers in Training,
  • Working with the State Director and/or Field Director, organize bird-dogging and shadowing activities with members and volunteers at events featuring federal elected officials,
  • Working with the State Director and/or Field Director and Communications coordinator, plan and execute earned media activities including letter-to-the-editor writing campaigns, op-eds, and earned media events,
  • Working with the State Director and/or Field Director, lead the work of team members to achieve fundraising goals by working toward the SEIU Justice for All Goal.
  • Provide regular written and verbal reports,· Organize in-district congressional visits and actions, and inform actions and constituent visits in Washington DC.

Experience Requirements:

  • At least one year of experience with organizing, community, or political campaigns,
  • Experience planning and implementing earned media events, rallies, and/or congressional visits,
  • Candidate should be a motivated self-starter with a commitment to the campaign's goals,
  • Experience in leading teams,· Bilingual skills useful, but not required.

Skills Required:

  • Excellent listening and communication skills,
  • Good computer skills,
  • Good judgment in interacting and communicating with the pubic, as well as political and community leaders,
  • Ability to be accountable and to hold others accountable,
  • Willingness and ability to take direction and function well within a team structure,
  • Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully in diverse communities,
  • Willingness to learn new skills and keep current on the news and issues that affect the campaign,
  • Ability to effectively collect contributions and track progress toward goals,
  • Ability to project a positive image of the union and campaign,· Knowledge and/or experience working with community based organizations and coalitions, and willingness to conduct outreach to community groups and leaders.

Other Qualifications:

  • A valid drivers license and clean driving record,
  • Energized by political and issue advocacy involvement.

Working Conditions: Long and irregular hours, including weekends and occasional holidays.

Reports To: Field Director or designee (note, may report to State Director in some states).

Term of Employment: This is a temporary position.

Political Community Organizers will begin as early as February 2009 and ending as late as August 2009.

Change that Works Campaign Organizer in Training - $2600 Monthly plus Benefits

SEIU is looking for a motivated, organized, and dedicated individual to work with a Change that Works Campaign Political Community Organizer to implement a grassroots advocacy campaign to pass national health care for all and the Employee Free Choice Act in 2009.

The Organizer in Training will work as part of a team to implement an escalating field campaign that will include mobilization, organization building, earned media, and direct action to influence priority Members of Congress to support legislative priorities critical to rebuilding the middle class.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to work with your Political Community Organizer to:

  • Help execute a plan to educate federal elected officials and constituents on health care and employee free choice through activities such as house meetings, patch through calls, earned media events, direct action and other methods.
  • Take responsibility for organizing and implementing organization building and mobilization field activities in your assigned area including one on one meetings, house meetings and regular field mobilizations,
  • Build local organizations by recruiting, training, coaching, and motivating teams of volunteers and members in targeted areas,
  • Provide regular written and verbal reports,· Mobilize members and activists to participate in targeted activities such as bird-dogging, demonstrations, and earned media activities—including letter-to-the-editor writing campaigns, op-eds, and events—designed to move priority elected officials,
  • Help achieve fundraising goals by working toward the SEIU Justice for All Goal.

  • Candidate should be a motivated self-starter with a commitment to the movement for quality, affordable health care for everyone and employee free choice,
  • Good listening and communication skills,
